How Does This Happen?
Medications are a frequent cause of constipation. The following drugs all decrease the passage of food through the bowel: Codeine (Tylenol 3), Oxycodone (Percocet), Hydro morphine (Dilaudid), Antidepressants (Amitriptyline and Tofranil), Anticonvulsants (Phenytoin, Dilantin, and Tegretol) and Calcium channel blockers (Cardizem, Nifedipine, and Procardia).
Not listening to your body or suppressing the urge to defecate, can also lead to constipation.
Diet is an important factor as well. Lack of fiber, healthy oils and fats, and lack of water in the diet all lead to irregularity.
